| The lake of Melissani and the caves of Drogarti are standard fare on the Kefalonia excursion bus. Drogarti cave, which is reached on the Sami to Argostoli road, is a cave encrusted with stalagmites and stalagtites. Melissani, on the other hand, is a lake set in a cavern where you can have a man row you around whilst he sings.
FoI has heard so little positive about either of the two experiences on offer that we have only have posted them up to demonstrate that we do know of their existence. It seems unfortunate that these two wonders have sucumbed wholesale to a fanatical tourism.
Mass numbers and money being demanded for singing has turned many people's experiences of Melissani sour, with the endless coaches adding only a manic air to proceedings. The Drogarti cave, on the other hand, seems to have terminally suffered from being converted into a theatre.
If you want to experience the cliche of Kefalonia, then a trip here is right up your street. Friends of Kefalonia, however, are more than happy to be converted and hear that visitors' experiences at the two venues have changed their lives. Till then we find it hard to recommend you visit. |
