Description
St George's castle was capital of Kefalonia until the end of the 17th Century. The Byzantines started the work in the 12th Century but it was the Venetians who gave the castle its present day look.

It is this dunce's-cap of a hill which gave the castle an almost impregnable position. St George's castle was to remain the capital of Kefalonia right up until the Napoleonic wars.

Rumour has it that there were even tunnels that once connected the castle to Argostoli some 5km away. These, of course, collapsed in the 53 earthquake!

A recent EU grant has tranformed the castle from dilapidation into a a great place to wander around, especially in the evening when there are amazing views 360 degrees and a great sunset to go with it.

There is little by way of information at the castle itself, though the scenery and grandeur make the visit worthwhile. A couple of cafes at the gate will keep you well-watered.

Transport comment

This top trip is easy to reach by car, or you can take the bus to Travilata on the road to Skala. From here it's a half hour gentle walk up to the top. The concrete road, which climbs the castle's southern flank, is the best one for the walk up. Enroute look out for the giant Agave cacti who have found a seemingly perfect location in the rocky grounds of the castle foundations.

If you're coming by car you can drive right up by either the southern or northern route (which is sign-posted to Troyanata and the Omala valley. This is the easiest route).

If you're coming in the evening by car then a trip to Hersonas taverna in Troyanata with its celebration of everything meaty - he's also a butcher - will round off a perfectly medieval day. Why not treat yourself to a car hire whilst you're on Kefalonia so you get the most out of your visit. Click here for Kefalonia Car Hire
