Omala valley

Omala valley vineyard

Description
Omala is at the heart of Kefalonia's wine production. It is on the slopes all around the valley that vineyards of the famous Robolla grape can seen surviving on a scant and rocky soil.

The nearby cooperative winery offers the possibilities for tasting this legendary wine, although in recent years, several fine quality boutique wineries have also grown up, most notably Gentilini and Metaxas. They too can culture your palate in this direction should you choose.

With three appelations to its name, Kefalonia is the only Ionian island that really has any quality wine that actually makes it off the island. By way of success, Gentilini recently got one of their wines into the World's Top 100 New Finds for 2004. Pity they only made a thousand bottles!

At the very centre of the Omala valley is the great Gerasimos monastery which can be seen for miles around. Named after the patron saint of Kefalonia, the monastery is also home to Gerasimos' bones. For those who like to mix the the medieval with the macbre, there's the chance to descend deep into the ground, through a narrow tunnel into the very cell where Gerasimos spent his monastic life. The lack of oxygen down here and the surreal decor are enough to induce a religious experience in even the most hardened atheist.

St Gerasimos, like many an apostle was a miracle worker and the results of his handiwork can be seen in the nearby fields some 1 km from the monastery. Here in a handful of fields are the well-heads of over forty wells. So the story goes, wherever Gerasimos placed his stick water was to be found. On an often partched island like Kefalonia, being able to summon up water at will is no small gift...hardly suprising he won the affections of the islanders.

The village of Valsamata was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953 by the British but its not until you are on the slopes of Enos that one can truely appreciate the bizzare, yet strangly attractive layout of the village itself. A radiating cobweb of streets fans out across the Omala valley in striking contrast to the more organic architecture of traditional Kefalonian villages.

A trip into the Omala comes as pleasant change to the somewhat purpose built and temporary lifestyle of the resorts. This is Kefalonia with an old and cultured heart with wines, priests and curios to explore.

Transport comment
You can get a bus to Valsamata from Argostoli, Kefalonia's capital. Most visitors, however, make the trip here by car. You can always leave the valley by another route returning via Troyanata and St George's castle making your day more than the standard excursion fare.

Check out Hersonas in Troyanata for its old-style flesh-hall of a taverna. Why not treat yourself to a car hire whilst you're on Kefalonia so you get the most out of your visit. Click here for Kefalonia Car Hire
