| The recently opened Botanical Gardens, on the outskirts of Kefalonia's capital, Argostoli, are a great introduction to the Greek landscape. Called Cephalonia Botanica, the garden aims to make visitors aware of the landscapes and plants around them.
Funded by the Cosmetatos Foundation, the gardens are built around the idea of showing what grows in each of the charateristic Greek landscapes.
Whether that's the low lying scrub of the phrygana, with its aromatic carpet of shrubs, or the classic environment of the cypress grove, the garden introduces
the visitor to each plant and how it is that it came to colonise that particular landscape.
British horticulturist, Jenni Gay, has spent the past few year bringing the garden to life and though it has some way to go, there is plenty to already keep you interested.
There are five wonderful sections to the gardens to explore. |
