FoI comment
Xi is a lesser known resort situated at the southern end of Paliki peninsula of Kefalonia (Cephalonia).

Xi is often pronounced by the English 'Zee', but it is actually pronounced with a rolling explosion of air from the back of the throat, as is clearing phlegm! Get a local person to teach you.

Xi is dominated by one hotel, the Cephalonia Palace, which although large, is surrounded by pretty plants and has a retro 70's style. Aside from this hotel, there are numerous apartments dotted around the flat land behind the beach and a few shops, tavernas and bars.

Xi has a pleasantly uncommercial feel to it and families from all over Europe come to holiday in this quiet corner of Kefalonia (Cephalonia).

AttractivenessFoi rating: 6/10
Xi is famous for the red sand on its beach. Along with the strange, grey alluvial deposits that characterise the landscape around the Paliki peninsula, this gives Xi a unique look.

Although there is a large hotel and numerous apartment blocks, these are often hidden from view by gardens and pretty flowers, giving Xi the feel of a quite mature resort. The downside of Xi is that you are quite cut off from the rest of the island without a car.

CleanlinessFoi rating: 7/10
Xi is a tidy, clean and well maintained resort.

SafetyFoi rating: 6/10
Although there are no real pavements at this resort, Xi is rather out on a limb at the end of the road, so it has no passing traffic. Friends of Kefalonia would recommend a torch to find your way back to your apartment at night.

Non-beach activitiesFoi rating: 4/10
Without a car, non-beach activities are limited. The area around Xi is flat and would make for an interesting exploration by foot or by bike. There is a lovely area for cycling a little to the north west of Xi at Krokidata, which makes for a great introduction to the countryside of Kefalonia. See Kefalonia Explorer for more details.

If you have a car, the whole of the Paliki peninsula of Kefalonia, with its dramatic beaches and lush countryside is within easy reach. You can also get the small ferry across the Gulf of Argostoli to the main part of Kefalonia. Within easy reach is the main town, Argostoli and all the villages of the Livathos region. Why not treat yourself to a car hire whilst you're on Kefalonia so you get the most out of your visit. Click here for Kefalonia Car Hire

Greek authenticityFoi rating: 4/10
Xi is most definitely a resort rather than a true village of Kefalonia (Cephalonia), grown up around the beach. It does have some authentic Kefalonian countryside around it, albeit a bit scrubby.
