FoI comment
Skala is somewhat of a hit and miss affair. The old part of Skala is a working village with church, school and square and numerous brightly-coloured Parapigmata, or wooden buildings built for immediate relief after the earthquake. This part of town has a lot of character and is a pleasant Kefalonian village.

There is, however, a lot of new development in Skala and the resort is increasingly dominated by large apartment complexes, designed to pack the tourists in and keep them in. They are an unattractive blight on Skala and some of the complexes along the coastline are completely cut off. This leaves visitors with a long, hot walk into town if they want to use anything but the complex's taverna and shop.

Why not treat yourself to the Kefalonia Digital Information Pack which includes 7 Introductory Walks, including the Skala Trail, a guide to Kefalonia, eight wildlife booklets and the online version of the 25 min FoI Movie Kefalonia Explorer - just 3.95! AttractivenessFoi rating: 5/10
Skala was at one time an attractive village with a lot of character drawn from its colourful wooden houses. Its recent development, however, if far from inspiring. Does modern Greece have more than one architect? Hopefully Skala will put a stop to these big developments before the whole resort slips into decline.

The old part of town is still a pleasant place to sit for a drink and Skala is saved a little by the huge number of pine trees that keep the place cool and filled with a wonderful aroma.

Skala beach is admittedly dramatic, with several kilometers of soft, white sand.

CleanlinessFoi rating: 7/10
The resort and village are well maintained and clean and the beach cleaned regularly during the summer.

SafetyFoi rating: 5/10
The safety of the resort depends upon where you are staying. In the old part of town, there are pavements and its numerous bars and tavernas keep the road well lit.

If you are staying at one of the apartment complexes further along the coast, you are taking your life into your own hands if you want to walk into town. The road can get busy in the summer and the traffic is fast. Friends of Kefalonia would definitely recommend a torch and brightly coloured clothing to make yourself obvious along this road.

Friends of Kefalonia has a self-guided trail around Skala which will help you to get a feel for the old village. It will take you to Skala's oldest villa, from Roman times, with its spectacular mosaics. The trail will also lead you to the ancient walls of the village. See Kefalonia Top Trips for more information.

The area immediately around Skala is quite flat, so makes for an interesting day out on bikes. You can also follow the coastal path to Poros, which is quite a long way but a nice walk. Leaflets are available locally on Kefalonia (Cephalonia).

Skala is an increasingly busy resort with a wide range of tavernas, shops, swimming pools, fairly quiet bars and the usual range of tourist amenities. Why not treat yourself to a car hire whilst you're on Kefalonia so you get the most out of your visit. Click here for Kefalonia Car Hire

Greek authenticityFoi rating: 5/10
Skala is a real Kefalonian village, complete with square, school and church and has a fairly large population of local people.

In the summer months, however, this number is completely swamped by the number of tourists and this will increase as does the development.
