FoI comment
Sami is not renowned as being one of the most attractive resorts on Kefalonia (Cephalonia). It is very much a modern town and the biggest port of north Kefalonia.

Sami was the base on Kefalonia for several of the sets for the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin and you can still see a couple of tavernas named after it.

AttractivenessFoi rating: 4/10
Sami was one of the four ancient capitals of the island, but it was not at the modern site of Sami. In fact there are no old buildings in Sami today and it is not renowned as an attractive place. It is very much a working town with a fairly scruffy feel to it.

Having said that, the views across the water to the neighbouring island of Ithaca are quite dramatic and the countryside around is pleasant.

CleanlinessFoi rating: 5/10
Sami is a fairly well maintained, clean resort and town, although the fumes from cars and lorries can get a bit much at busy ferry times.

SafetyFoi rating: 5/10
There are pavements in Sami but the roads can get very busy just before a ferry is due to leave or just after one has arrived.

A string of tavernas and bars along the harbourside make for a pleasant enough place to wile away a couple of hours.

In the nearby region are the underground caves of Drogerati and Melissani which, although admittedly beautiful, are now a bit of a tourist trap.

Karavomilos is a couple of kilometres down the road and it is here that the underground water from the lakes eventually surfaces. With its pretty lake and sea mill, Karavomilos is certainly worth a visit.

On the hillside to the south of Sami is Ancient Sami. You can either walk up the path from behind the resort, or drive up, past Antisamos beach. Either way makes for a great trip. Aside from the gigantuan walls that can be spotted on the hillside, there are the ruins of an ancient settlement. Different building styles from Mycenean, Roman and Byzantine periods can be seen as different civilisations built onto and repaired the walls. There are also amazing views down to Sami and across to Ithaca from up here. See Kefalonia Top Trips for more information. Greek authenticityFoi rating: 7/10
Sami is most definitely an authentic Greek village but is a modern port town, rather than a picture postcard harbour.
