Poros's kitsch square
|

|
| Set in the south east of Kefalonia (Cephalonia), Poros has a pleasantly uncommercial feel and a unique style. Poros has a funky retro feel to it, with its kitsch village square and 1970's style apartment blocks along the waterfront.
Poros is a popular resort on the south east coast of Kefalonia which has a loyal following of British holiday-makers. It also attracts Greek, Italian and northern European tourists giving it a pleasantly cosmopolitain feel.

| There are two parts to Poros, both of which have accommodation. Apartments which cling to the amphitheatre of a hillside around the picturesque little harbour afford wonderful sea views. Poros also stretches out along the bay behind the pebbly beach, which is also attractive. |

| Poros is a clean resort with no evidence of litter. It is well maintained throughout the year.

| With ferries leaving from the port to Killini on the mainland, as well as numerous other destinations, Poros can get busy with traffic at ferry times. This is the major port of south Kefalonia. There are pavements, however and you can walk along the waterfront to the square and on to the harbour. |

| The area behind Poros makes for interesting exploration and there is a coastal walk which follows a path around to the resort of Skala. A leaflet is available locally with details. There is also a trail which leads up behind the village towards the Tzanata tombs.
Since Poros is an important town on Kefalonia, there are often local events in the summer, such as concerts performed by the Poros Philharmonic.
It is also possible to get a bus into Argostoli and back, although you must leave at 7.30 and return at 14.00 as their are only two buses a day. The route takes about an hour so you get about five hours in Argostoli which is plenty of time for a quick look around, a spot of shopping and an early lunch.
There are other attractions in the surrounding area, such as the Tzanata tombs, Mount Enos National Park and nearby villages, but you need a car to access them. See Kefalonia Top Trips and Island Explorer for more details.
Poros itself offers a range of low key nightlife; a selection of mellow bars, tavernas and cafes in the village square and along the seafront as well as numerous shops. |

| Poros is a working port and harbour village as well as a resort. Although there are no old buildings at Poros, the old town being lost in the 1953 earthquake, this is an 'authentic' modern village. With 1,500 inhabitants, there is a real community at Poros throughout the year. That means that there are good amenities in Poros, including a bank, a range of shops and tavernas as well as the usual tourist facilities. |
