FoI comment
Kefalonia's most northern harbour is Fiscardo and the main village in the Erissos peninsula. Ferries from neighbouring Lefkas and Ithaca dock here.

A cluster of old houses, tavernas and apartment blocks hug the shoreline around the harbour, backed by a low hill.

Fiscardo has been inhabited for thousands of years and evidence of its heritage can be seen all around the area. That includes everything from the Roman sarcophagae by the water's edge to Venetian buildings and the British built lighthouse.

Fiscardo is popular with day trippers and is one of the main stops on the around the island coach tours. Few but the rich and famous can afford to stay in Fiscardo in the last few years as prices have become more and more prohibitively expensive. Almost everyone who lives on Kefalonia or neighbouring Ithaca has a tale to tell of the price hikes in this resort.

The moorings at Fiscardo have long been favoured by yachtsmen and there are always a flotilla or two of yachts bobbing in the harbour. These days, many head for Agia Efimia, a little further to the south.

If you are in the north of Kefalonia, this historical village is definitely worth a visit as it is one one of the few places in this part of the Ionian that escaped the 1953 earthquake.

AttractivenessFoi rating: 7/10
Fiscardo was very fortunate in escaping the full force of the 1953 earthquake and many of its buildings remain intact. It would be fair to say that it is a pretty harbour but it has neither the crumbling charms or the dramatic setting of its near neighbour, Assos.

The price premiums of Fiscardo have lead to such a degree of renovation of its Venetian buildings that you can hardly tell whether they were built four hundred years ago or just four. The new tiles and perfectly-painted buildings give the village a chocolate box look.

Although building has been stopped in the immediate harbour area, new development continues a hundred meters to the south as well as around the coastline of northern Kefalonia (Cephalonia).

CleanlinessFoi rating: 7/10
Fiscardo is a fairly clean and well maintained resort, save for the Roman graves by the water's edge which seem to collect a lot of rubbish.

SafetyFoi rating: 7/10
A large part of Fiscardo is pedestrianised so that there is a little danger from traffic. A large car park has been built close to the harbour to minimise traffic problems. It is, however, quite strangely laid out, so as to fit the smallest possible number of cars into the largest possible area and there was difficulty finding a space even in October.

The area around the port can get quite busy at ferry times, with coaches and cars disembarking and the area is best avoided at these times.

There is a lot of boat traffic so great care must be taken leaving or entering the harbour if you hire a motorboat.

Non-beach activitiesFoi rating: 7/10
The northern tip of Kefalonia is a great place to explore on foot or by boat. There are numerous footpaths that run close to the coast around Fiscardo, including a path to the Venetian and British lighthouses. Friends of Kefalonia's Fiscardo Trail will lead you around the area and introduce you to some of its more interesting points. The walk around to Foki bay is also quite pleasant.

Many people hire small motorboats to explore the coastline of northern Kefalonia, where numerous small and secluded coves can be found.

In Fiscardo itself, the harbour side cafe's offer a pleasant place to sit and relax, along with a scattering of shops.

The Fiscardo museum has an exhibition of natural history of the area, which is worth a look. There are also some Roman graves down by the waterfront, although they could be better maintained. Why not treat yourself to a car hire whilst you're on Kefalonia so you get the most out of your visit. Click here for Kefalonia Car Hire

Greek authenticityFoi rating: 8/10
Fiscardo is one of the few villages left standing since the earthquake and as such it is worth a visit. There is a population of Kefalonians who reside in Fiscardo, although this is only a small number in the winter months so this is a genuine Greek village.
