FoI comment
Valsamata is the main village of Kefalonia's Omala Valley, a dramatic flat valley in the south east of Kefalonia (Cephalonia) at the foot of Mount Enos.

The original village of Valsamata was destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, the modern village being rebuilt with the help of the British.

The settlement is fairly large, growing up close to the most important monastery on Kefalonia, Agios Gerasimos. The economy of Valsamata is based on agriculture, the surrounding land being some of the most flat and fertile on Kefalonia (Cephalonia). Attractiveness8/10
Set in lush agricultural land of grain fields with vineyards climbing the steep mountainous terrain around, Valsamata is a very scenic village. The village was laid out along quite structured lines, which can be best viewed from Mount Enos.

Omala Valley field of wells

Activities
This is a great region for walking. It is a good base from which to explore the National Park of Mount Enos as well as the Omala Valley.

On the outskirts of the village is a field with many wells. The story goes that Saint Gerasimos had the power of divining water. Wherever he touched his walking stick, a well was dug and a water source found. In fact there is an underground riverbed at this point. In this field are some 46 wells!

Just outside of the village are the ruins of old Valsamata, an eerie place to explore.

The Robola wine co-operative is at the nearby village of Frangata, where you can have a tour of the factory and taste some Robola wine. The Robola wine festival takes place on the first weekend after 16th August, bringing food and wine lovers from across Kefalonia (Cephalonia).

There riding stables situated in the Omala valley as the area is well suited to horse riding.
