Sami harbour
FoI comment
Sami is a fairly large settlement in the north east of Kefalonia with the island's second largest port at its heart. Sami has periods of intense commotion with cars and lorries pouring on and off of the ferries.

A string of tavernas and bars along the harbour side make for a pleasant enough place to wile away a couple of hours. Why not treat yourself to a Kefalonia Digital Information Pack with easy to do walks, wildlife booklets and guides. Click here to download

Attractiveness3/10
Sami was one of the four ancient capitals of Kefalonia, but it was not at this site. In fact there are no old buildings in Sami today. It is not a very attractive place but a working town with a fairly scruffy feel to it. It does, however, have quite dramatic views across the channel to neighbouring Ithaca.

Activities
If you find yourself in Sami itself, head down to one of the waterfront cafes for a drink or some fresh fish in one of the tavernas.

Ferries large and small cross the channel to Ithaca going several times a day in the summer. From Sami boats go to the islands capital Vathy, which makes for a pleasant day trip.

There are also ferries to Patras, on the mainland, where you can get a connection to Athens and in the summer it is also possible to get up to Corfu.

There is a small beach at the northern end of Sami and a few tourists do stay here. Dotted down the coast heading towards Agia Efimia are numerous pebbly coves and beaches and the dramatic Antisamos bay is a few kilometres away.

The nearby underground caves of Melissani and Drogarati caves are real crowd pullers.
