The Pilaros district of Kefalonia (Cephalonia) straddles the divide between the main bulk of the island and the peninsula of Erissos. It is the fine alluvial soils that run through tthis valley that have encouraged agriculture, although many of the villages, perched on the slopes were built were a view to defending themselves from pirate slavers.

Since ancient times, this area has been well defended, Mycenean fortresses on both sides of the valley can be seen a few kilometres from Agia Efimia.

Until the advent of torism the region was famous for making feta cheese, although this is largely disappearing as the island becomes more integrated into the Greek economy.

The harbour of Agia Efimia is were most visitors to the region stay and this pretty port remains a good natured and friendly base for a stay on Kefalonia. To the west Pilaros rises until abruptly ending with a precipitous descent to the famous Myrtos beach. This area is fertile with many small farmstead colonising the flat land of the valley floor. Villages with their pretty bougainvillea gardens straddle the northern flankof Pilaros looking out from their vantage point across the valley.

Activities

Pilaros is not an easy area to explore, most visitors simply drive through in on their way north or south. The area needs to develop resources to better communicate what the viallges have on offer. Until then, it's a question of stopping every so often for a wander. Take the high road along the northern flank of Pilaros for a more leisurely appreciation of the villages in the region.
