Fanari
It is well worth getting out of your car hire here to get a look at the lighthouse, the views across the gulf of Argostoli to the Lixouri peninsula and the nearby sea mill. After a short distance you will come to Kefalonia’s premiere resort.Lassi
Lassi is the largest and most commercial resort on Kefalonia. One of our Kefalonia car hire collection points is on the main road that runs though the resort. With its proximity to the island’s capital and Kefalonia airport, its two spectacular sandy beaches, Makris Yialos and Plati Yialos, and good transport links, it is easy to see why Lassi was the first resort to be developed on Kefalonia and why it continues to be the most popular. Lassi is a strip development with tavernas, tourist shops, bars and other tourist services such as car hire crammed in down a kilometre length of the main road.Parking in Lassi is not always easy, especially in the high summer but you may find somewhere if you wish to get out of you hire car for a drink or a bit to eat. Otherwise, drive straight through the resort and follow the road south, passing through an area of pine trees and olive groves. After a few kilometres, you will come to the village of Svoronata.
Svoronata
The pretty village of Svoronata lies at the heart of the Livathos region in south west Kefalonia. With its rich soils and relatively flat land, Livathos is agriculturally rich and in turn has some of the island’s wealthiest inhabitants. The small village of Livathos is still very much alive, with its winding streets dotted around with colourful gardens and some amazing views out over south Kefalonia. Passing straight through Svoronata in your Kefalonia car hire, continue down the main southern route, taking the left hand fork signposted Kourkoumelata.Kourkoumelata
There has been a settlement at the site of modern day Kourkoumelata for thousands of years but it is famous on Kefalonia for its modern history. The whole village of Kourkoumelata was shaken to ruins by the great earthquake that hit Kefalonia in 1953. The rebuild of the whole village was financed by a wealthy shipping family, residents of the village, the Vergotis family and it couldn’t have been more kitsch. Kourkoumelata has the feel of Port Merion in North Wales, with its school being built in the style of an ancient Greek temple and grandiose mausoleums scattered about the village. The Vergotis family continued to help villagers long after the end of post-earthquake hardships, paying the water bills of the entire village as long as villagers agreed to plant and maintain their gardens. They still do and it makes for a beautiful village so do get out of your car hire and wander around. It is possible to park your Kefalonia car hire by the Marina café on the edge of the village – the café also has some amazing views out over south Kefalonia.
Returning to your hire car, carry on along the road towards the village of Metaxata, with the dramatic backdrop of towering Mount Aenos. Metaxata was famously home to Lord Byron for a time, before he lost his life on mainland Greece fighting for Independence. Passing through Metaxata, follow the signs for St George’s Castle. You can park your car hire in the small car park below the castle.
St George's Castle
Until the end of the 17th century, this was the capital of Kefalonia. The castle was originally Byzantine but it was added to over the course of the next 400 years. The castle is set in a strategic position on the top of a dunce’s cap of a hill, making it practically impregnable. There were once apparently tunnels that connected the castle with the modern capital of Kefalonia, Argostoli but if these did exist, they must have collapsed in one or other of Kefalonia’s earthquakes.Although the castle was in a terrible state up to a decade ago, an EU grant has transformed it into a great place to wander around. There are amazing views across Kefalonia in all directions. From St George’s castle, follow the signs back to Argostoli and the end of your journey.
