Excursion to Fiscardo, Assos & Erissos
Leaving Agia Efimia
Leaving the small resort of Agia Efimia, the road winds up and up onto the mountainous spine of the Errisos penisula. This is one of the most rugged landscapes on Kefalonia, it's high vantage point at one time offering protection against pirates. You can park up your hire car at a few spots along here to take in the amazing views south over Agia Efimia and Sami.Neohori is one of the first villages you will meet on this road, a village not used to visitors. Life up here is a very different proposition to the resorts below. Small semi-subsitence farming is still practiced. Bee keeping, shepherding and growing olives are very much in evidence.
Patricata
Patricata is one of the largest villages on the spine of Erissos and one of the highest. Even in summer it can be quite cool especially when the sea mist rolls in. It's a sprawling affair and again very much an agricultural village. Take time to break your journey here and have a wander around. There is one of the best tavernas on the island up here, Konte Pigionas. From Patricata its all downhill through several small villages that nestle in the crooks of the landscape, often surrounded by large cypress tree forest. The soil up on Erissos is extremely rocky and many fields are surrounded by numerous dry-stone walls that flank your descent.
Emerging back on to the main road you can choose to take your hire car on the main road to Fiscardo or go via the hamlet of Evreti instead.
Fiscardo
Fiscardo is perhaps one of Kefalonia's best know resorts. This ancient port on the north of the island has been inhabited since neolithic times. There have been finds of stone-age tools around the area and along the main road many old Roman sarcophagae can be seen. In more recent times, Fiscardo has become one of Kefalonia's premier resorts. You will need to park up your car hire as the village is wisely pedestrianized. There is an FoI trail for Fiscardo which you can download as part of the Digital Information Pack for Kefalonia that will lead you out onto the headland and the two old lighthouses. Fiscardo would make a good lunch spot, but be aware that Fiscardo is not as cheap as other resorts on the island.Assos
Leaving Fiscardo you can head south on the road to Assos. Assos is reached by a long and windy road down from the beautiful, and yet hair-raising, road that runs high along the coastal cliffs. Again the village is pedestrianized, so you will need to park up your hire car. Assos is perhaps the most pretty of all the villages on Kefalonia, not only does it have an amazingly dramatic setting under the lee of a giant Venetian fortress, but the village itself is a true delight where the locals have tried to restrict building and retain the charm of this traditional village. There is also an FoI trail for Assos which you can download as part of the Digital Information Pack for Kefalonia. However long you spend in Assos, it will be difficult to tear yourself away. Finally on the way home you will pass by Myrtos beach. Dramatic and wild, you can take the long road down for a dip at what is commonly voted one of the great beaches of the world. Its white pebbles and blue churning sea are an assault on the senses. From Myrtos beach you can take the road back to the Argostoli (about half an hour in your hire car) and Lassi and the southern resorts of Katelios, Skala and Poros.
